Wilson Ultra 100L v5

The lighter version of the Ultra 100, at 280 g unstrung and swingweight 310, with easy power and spin for improving players, but it runs out of stability against heavy balls and costs full flagship money.

What it is

The Wilson Ultra 100L v5 is the lighter version of Wilson’s power-and-spin Ultra 100: same 100 in² head and 16×19 pattern, but 280 g unstrung (295 g strung per TW) and a 310 swingweight. Wilson US lists it as model WR17890 (unstrung SKUs WR178911U0 to U5, grips 4 to 4 5/8) at $289 unstrung, with a strung option at $239 (SKU WR178911V). Tennis Warehouse also has it at $289 (code WU10L5), in stock in grips 0–3. The paint is “electric indigo.”

Who it’s for

Improving 3.0–3.5 players, juniors moving up, and lighter adults who want a modern 100 that swings fast and gives easy depth. Every 100 already on Court List (Pure Drive, VCORE 100, Clash 100, SX 300) is a full-weight frame around 295–300 g unstrung. This is the first one for players who don’t have the swing speed for those yet.

Skip it if you’re 4.0+ with a full swing, play against heavy hitters, or plan to stay on this frame for years. You’ll either add lead or outgrow it.

Standout details

  • Specs (TW): 100 in² · 27” · 295 g strung (280 g unstrung per Wilson) · 4 pts HL · SW 310 · RA 64 · 24/26.5/24.5 mm beam · 16×19 · 50–60 lbs
  • Power (4): a wide-ish dual-taper beam on a 100 gives free depth for players who don’t swing very fast yet
  • Control (2): a light, quick frame plus an open 16×19 is the price of that ease. Shots fly long when you swing big, and off-center hits against pace are where the 310 swingweight shows
  • Spin (4): Wilson and TW both pitch FORTYFIVE flex and the open pattern for spin, and a fast swing helps
  • Comfort (3): RA 64, Crush Zone grommets, and a full carbon handle make it better than the old Ultra L. But a light frame passes more shock to the arm on heavy balls than a heavier one, so it’s not in the Clash comfort lane
  • Value (3): $289 unstrung is full price. Wilson’s $239 strung option is the better deal if it suits your string preference

Who’s hitting it

We aren’t naming any pros. The Ultra family has tour players, but the 280 g “L” version is a retail frame for club players.

Retail ≠ tour: pros on Ultra paint swing heavy, customized frames, not this one.

Honest verdict

Court List had no light 100 for improving players, and the Ultra 100L v5 is the cleanest current pick: modern tech, easy power and spin, and no overlap with the live 100s. It’s a 3 because the light build that makes it easy for a 3.0–3.5 player is exactly what most 4.0+ players outgrow, and $289 doesn’t discount that. Try it if you’re building strokes; serious hitters should go to the full-weight Ultra 100 or the Pure Drive.
